New to Me Hembrug A1 Lathe; new to Me Hembrug A1 Lathe. Submitted by guest (not verified) on Wed, - 14:59. I downloaded a manual for the Hembrug A1 DR1 it's pretty close but not exactly the same. This control is differnent than the manual. I think it's Low speed to the left, High speed to the right, Up for forward Down.

Greetings all. I have just purchased an old (1960's) Hembrug 11' X 20' toolroom lathe. I am looking for any written information on this machine-obviously a manual would be great, but anything at all will help, I'm sure. I'm not taking delivery until September, but would like to get a head start.
Machine is fully optioned with both tailstocks, all collets with integral closer, 'infinitely' variable speed, taper turning, metric/imperial threading etc. Model number may be D1-S or similar. Gonna do some profile measurements on tailstock side of way, just in case the worst happens - as long as I don't loose the paper later on. (it is hell getting old). Still got some wear and galling on saddle that need repair as well, turcite seems to take care of both. Brings me to a point of contention that I have seen time and time again - that the marks and scratches always line up with the grease grooves in these type of slides.
Makes me wonder if when people lube this stuff, they bother to wipe the zerk fitting. Looks to me like the offending steel chip is getting pumped in with the lube. I've spent a lifetime replacing way wipers, when really I should have been kicking a greaser in the a.! Old grease would be a problem as well, do yourself a favor and spend some time taking apart and cleaning away the old stuff and coating with new before start up. Had to laugh at the part about getting old. Laugh with you I mean, not at you. I plan to do a full strip search of this machine when I get it, cavities and all.
Since it is my first lathe real lathe. I am going to take a little time to ensure that it is 'good to go' before commissioning it.
Paint too, probably.well, not really. I last week bought a basket case Hercus.
on which I plan to make a few weeks worth of new guy mistakes on before I subject the Hembrug to the full weight and majesty of my ignorance. Hercus 9A', a spookily accurate antipodean twin of the SB9A. Once I am up and running I shall use the Hercus as a guinea pig for my new Sandvik scraper and old copy of Machine Tool reconditioning. Real HSM stuff.having a machine shop so that I can work on my machine shop.
